Bio


Lorena La Grassa is a visual, conceptual and multimedia artist. She often associates her work with the concept of transformation and metamorphosis, She creates installations and mixed media works using fibers, found objects, acrylic, sculptural forms and photography. Her work has been featured in many exhibits and different publications between Italy and United Stated. Visual artist and Sight Specific Projects Co Director, La Grassa started as a photojournalist. She graduated from the Istituto Europeo di Design and she attended the philosophy program at the Palermo University and Literature program at the University La Sapienza of Rome. Soon, La Grassa became active in fine art photography and also her involvement in contemporary art became stronger and began experimenting with photography techniques as well as with fibers and other materials and media. In 1995 she received a fellowship from her Alma Mater, after which she started her career as a still-life photographer collaborating with Agence Pix in Paris and working with advertising agencies and private companies. In 1996 she decided to move to USA. Still active in fine art many shows in Italy and USA have followed between museums, galleries and art associations. In 1998 La Grassa started to working in PR for a Taranto Gallery in New York. Later she became director and curator of the same gallery until 2000. Her work as artist and curator has been reviewed in several national and international publications. She works now as independent artist and curator. Lorena La Grassa is the former Valley Arts District Coordinator and ValleyArts Inc. Executive Director and former NJAI curator. Her last major projects as curator, director and coordinator were Uncharted Territory exhibition, the Valley Arts District Open Studio Stroll, The Street Tattoo, The Sculpture Garden and multiple site exhibitions such as The Missing Piece for Valley Art Inc., Terra, Incubation and Peripheral Fields for NJAI .
